Handmade American Turquoise Necklace with Haitian Milagro Pendant
This is an amazing One of a Kind necklace for so many reasons! Starting with the American Turquoise, which is a glorious shade of robin's egg blue with visible pyrite inclusions. I selected STUNNING faceted Pyrite nuggets and decorative gunmetal finished copper beads to accent the Turquoise.
Suspended from the necklace, the focal is a Milagro cross. This is not just an ordinary Milagro! The cross was made from repurposed steel. Haitian artists have used steel oil drums as their art materials for decades, making them true folk art. Designs are spirited and are derived from their spiritual culture and beliefs. Pieces such as these are made to decorate home altars as well as to sell in the marketplace. Haitian pieces make great gifts and will make you look like an exotic world traveler when hung up by your computer or on the wall.
And...that's not all!
This pendant was hammered out of steel by wonderful artists who are trying hard to recover from the January 12, 2010 earthquake. They want to maintain their lives as artists. A portion of the proceeds from this pendant goes to a project called, "A Heart for Haiti" that funds relief activities to help artisans find markets for their products in countries that appreciate their unique style of crafts.

Necklace measures 24" (61 cm) and does not require a clasp. (measured without pendant)
Milagro is 3", and to keep the folk art flavour of the piece, I attached it using turquoise buckskin leather.

Milagros are translated as "little miracles". These charms have been used for centuries in churches for the faithful to request miracles.
